Filming

Wednesday 27th October
For the beginning of the documentary we plan on using Vox Pops to show that everyone has a fear or phobia, therefore today we filmed several Vox Pops in town using a people of different ages and genders to show that not only one group of people suffer from phobias. At first we were a little cautious and shy as in our culture, we have been taught that usually the people stopping you in the street are wanting to sell you something or hustle you. We were also scared of the reaction we would get, whether it be rejection. Luckily we overcame this fear pretty quickly as we decided that we must be confident if we would like this documentary to be a success. It was also an awakening call that everyday, no matter what people are doing, fear is a huge part of this world. Today, as well as filming voxpops, we also got to experience the topic of our documentary and undestand it more.

Thursday 28th October
We captured the Vox pops. We also filmed again. We decided that we would film things that related to what people in the voxpops had said and all the most common phobias, such as Spiders, snakes and pidgeons. Filming the voxpops the day before helped us realise exactly what we needed cutaways of. These would then be used to keep the transistions smooth in each interview and avoid jump cuts. So we took the camers out again. Firstly we went to the park, as we thought that we would find spiders and pidgeons. We were successful with the pidgeons however looking for spiders is harder than it seems. The spiders we found were too small to be recognised on camera, so we found it was a waste of time recording them. We wondered where we could get pictures of snakes and big spiders, we went in pet shops and unfortunately enough, the owners refused to let us film.

Friday 29th October
All the cutaways were filmed and captured. Now we had arranged an interview with a person who suffered from heights and horseflies. The interview was relaxed and informal and took place in the home of the sufferer. The background was plain. To fit in with the codes and conventions, he was sat on one third of the screen and his eye was 3/4 of the screen up. It was a good feeling recording our first interview and eventhough it was a time cosuming process, I finally thought that were getting somewhere. It was a load of my mind and I only wish that we have more successful days like this.

Saturday 30th October
We spent most of our time trying to get in touch with professionals as we wanted to interview people who could give the audience a deeper understanding and a more indepth knowledge of the subject. Unfortunately this was time wasted because most of them felt uncomfortable being filmed. It was a shame as we did feel like we had wasted a whole day. I suppose though that it was worth it, as you never know - one of the people we rang may have said yes. It is definately always worth asking, even if rejection is all you get.

Monday 1st Novemeber
We filmed the college counciller, as after every other person declining, this was the only professional interview we could get. The mise en scene in the interview was very good as it was in her practice room and it portrayed the stereo-typical view of a pschologist - white room, doctor's bed etc. This interview was great. Georgie did all the filming and it was really successful. The councillor was very nice and gave us all the relevant information.

Tuesday 2nd Novemeber
We had most of what we needed - the interviews, voxpops and cutaways. We captured both the interview with Dave (the sufferer) and also with Deb Instone (the college councillor)today. To capture the interviews and find out how many minutes of footage we had was fantastic! It was so good to know that we were atleast half way there. We still acknowledged that we do need more, but to have this much so far after all the interviewees turning us down, was a great feeling.

Wednesday 3rd Novemeber
We got an interview with someone who suffers from having hands put in his mouth. We did not know where we could film this, as we didn't feel we had the resources to find somewhere that would fit the topic. We quickly resolved this by deciding to use the blue screen. This meant that when we come to edit, we can change the background and make it relevant to what his fear is. Joe (the sufferer) was very patient with us and didnt mind the delay of finding a room. The answers he gave were also very good.

Monday 8th Novemeber
Today, we went to Leeroys Lizard Lounge to film more cutaways as we had not yet got any of snakes or lizards. Before going today, we had previously rang up to make sure the owner would be okay with us filming in his store. He got out certain species and allowed us to get as close to them as desired. An image of the largest snake was used within our Print Advert on a later date. After all the other animal places refused to let us film, it was good to know that we could now film all the insects and lizards we wanted. The even got them out of the cages and allowed us to feed them. I even got to hold various lizards and snakes. Today's filming was not only useful for our product but i had a great time and I had fun in the process.

Tuesday 9th Novemeber
We filmed three more interviews. One who was afraid of being stuck in a house fire, one with a fear of rollercoasters and a third sufferer who had a fear of milk due to an allergy when he was younger. He could not go near milk based products as he didn't want to feel the way he did when he had an allergic reaction. Now we had everything, I felt like a huge weight had lifted off my mind! Now all we had to concentrate on was editing. The editing was thoroughly done, as explained later on in my blog.
